Humane legislation for equines—stop horse slaughter in the United States

Horses need our help! For more than a decade, Congress has rejected the idea of tax money subsidizing horse slaughter, but the fate of American equines now hangs in the balance—the U.S. House Committee on Rules recently rejected two amendments that would keep horse slaughter from returning to the United States for the first time since 2007.

Why are we concerned?

Before being slaughtered, horses are often shipped for more than 24 hours without food, water or rest in crowded trucks. If they’re not seriously injured or killed in transit, they commonly arrive to slaughter having to endure repeated blows and sometimes remain conscious during dismemberment. The USDA has documented cruelty violations and severe injuries such as broken bones protruding from their bodies, eyeballs hanging by a thread of skin, and gaping wounds.

If you want to prevent this cruel, inhumane treatment of these majestic, sentient creatures, there’s no time to waste—make your voices heard NOW! Tell your elected officials you want protections for American horses, both domestic and wild. Let’s band together to stop horse slaughter in the U.S and end the export of horses for slaughter abroad.

How can you help?

  1. Click here (http://www.thln.org/contact-legislator) for your Congressional Representative's contact information. (Select "Congressional" for the District Type on the drop down menu.)
  2. Message your Representative on their website contact pages and urge them to protect our nation’s horses from slaughter and our wild horses from mass extermination in the final FY18 Appropriations bill. (Then please take the extra step and also CALL your Congressman's office and relay this message!)
  3. Email your two U.S. senators for Texas, Senator Cornyn and Senator Cruz on their web contact pages. Ask them to support the Senate version of the Agriculture Appropriations bill, which prohibits the use of federal funds on horse slaughter. Let them know you also support a prohibition on the use of our tax dollars to kill tens of thousands of wild horses and burros. (Then please take the extra step and also CALL Senator Cornyn's office at 202-224-2934 and Senator Cruz's office at (202) 224-5922 and relay this message via telephone.)

Horses do not deserve a death like this - please take action now or this horrific cruel means of killing could return to the United States in a matter of weeks!

Thank you for joining us in the fight for humane legislation for American horses!
