Gretchen Edmiston

  • I have lived in Texas all my life and I am on medicare, soc sec etc now. I am infuriated at what has happened to veterinary care with prices for everything costing 10 to 100 times what it cost in the past. Only the super rich can afford to go to the vet anymore. I have rescued many dogs and cats throughout my life and always been able to take care of them and raise them up to age 17 for dogs, 18-20 for cats, and 35+ for horses. Now I just discovered that treating a male cat with blocked bladder costs $500-$2800, and is mostly available at only “emergency” clinics. HOW in the hell did this mercenary act against poor people and their pets come into effect? I just lost a beautiful male cat because I was not rich enough to afford these prices. And putting him to sleep was going to cost anywhere from 55, 75, to $200 ??? YET I get paid almost nothing for social security because I was a public school teacher for 5 years which cut me down from 1200 soc sec to 300 in soc sec because of laws heaped upon us by the ultra wealthy to keep me from getting a “windfall” of money as a retired person so I am living on one half of what is considered outright poverty at $25K. I live on $17K per year and am expected to pay a fortune to either save or euthanize any pet I might have. This is Criminal abuse of citizens being carried on by our government. Who let this happen? And I own land I inherited from my grandfather who bought the land in 1895. It has been in our family for 125 years, but I cant sell it because some wealth seeking freak has decided to land lock me off my land and stole all the timber off it for himself and the crooks running the local govt in that county are charging me taxes 5 times what it ever cost before I inherited it: $900 a year. I have several college degrees from U of H, and a responsible background in working as an educator, realtor, and artist, but I am so poor now I can hardly exist, and our govt has taken women’s rights away, and allowed crooks to over price animal care to the point no one can own horses anymore, nor take care of family pets.
