An author on the website All Creatures posted a blog earlier this month calling attention to a scheduled event in Van Horn, a small town in Culberson County. Jason Owens, owner of forty donkeys, was planning to use his animals in an event called "donkey roping", a violent and inhumane type of rodeo where donkeys are electrically shocked into running and then chased down, roped around the neck and back legs, and then dragged around. Severe injuries and death have been reported at events like these in the past.
After the All Creatures blog was posted, several animal lovers like us blasted the town of Van Horn with pleas not to hold the event. Shortly after, the county sheriff's office canceled the event. Without all the hard work of animal activists, those donkeys could have been injured or killed. We must continue to push for events like these to be cancelled.
