Why Do We Need Wildlife Rehabilitation?
Wildlife in Texas, particularly in our cities, must contend with many hazards, i.e. dogs, cats, cars, rat poison and chlorinated pools, just to mention a few. Also, trapping and removing adults can leave helpless orphans behind. Injured and orphaned wildlife receive a second chance with the help of wildlife rehabilitator who are permitted by the state and federal government. Rehabilitators provide wildlife with appropriate food, medical care, socialization with their own species and, once healthy, release back into appropriate habitat.

How Can I Help Wildlife?

• Never attempt to keep wild animals as pets. They have naturally wild instincts and have not been domesticated for thousands of years like cats and dogs have been.

• For wildlife conflicts, give humane exclusion methods endorsed by the Humane Society of the United States a chance.

• Don't trap and remove adults (you could be leaving orphans behind).

• Don't use rat poison (many wild animals, as well as cats and dogs, are poisoned this way).

• Don't use sticky-glue boards (many non-target species, i.e. hummingbirds get stuck on too).

• CALL BEFORE YOU ACT! Many young wildlife found are not truly orphaned. Even if accidentally separated from their parents, young wildlife can often be reunited. KEEP TEXAS WILD!

Keeping wild families together in their natural homes is always the best alternative.
