Quick Summary: More than 600 dogs, most of them malnourished and living in their own waste, were seized this week from a puppy mill operating in Kaufman County. This news comes just weeks after nearly 500 emaciated, parasite-infested dogs were seized from a puppy mill operating in Montague County.
The Cedar Creek Humane Society discovered the Kaufman County puppy mill after someone came to them seeking dog food donations. Learning that food was needed for such a large number of dogs, Humane Society representatives visited the property and discovered hundreds of sickly dogs, mostly Chihuahuas, poodles and other small-breed dogs, living in their own waste, suffering from skin and foot infections, and in need of food and medical care.
The Montague County puppy mill raid, executed by Humane Society of North Texas officials, followed a lengthy investigation prompted by complaints made against the operation, known as Heddins Kennel, concerning the deplorable conditions in which hundreds of dogs were being kept. Sheriff Paul Cunningham, who executed the search and seizure warrant on July 7, testified in the seizure hearing that in addition to hundreds of sickly dogs, many bones were found on the property, along with several dead dogs.
PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO CONTACT YOUR STATE SENATOR AND STATE REPRESENTATIVE. Ask them to support future legislation to clean up the puppy mill industry.
Point out that as the law stands now, animal cruelty charges are the only recourse following months -- or even years -- of long-term abuse and neglect at the hands of puppy mill operators. By the time law enforcement officials can gather evidence and intervene, many animals are found dead or gravely ill.
We need pro-active measures that require large-scale commercial breeders to be licensed and regulated by the state and to meet at least a minimal level of humane care for the animals they keep in their facilities.

The Humane Society of the United States estimates that more than 95 percent of the dogs and cats being sold in pet stores or through online ads come from puppy mills.
